Transforming Professional Learning: Embracing the Go & Show Model

The primary goal of Aldine ISD's Multilingual Dual Language Program for Elementary Schools, serving students from 1st to 5th grade, is to provide an outstanding educational experience on their journey to mastering multiple languages. To achieve this objective, it is essential to adequately prepare our bilingual teachers. To ensure effective professional development, we will rely on the key principles outlined by Allison Gulamhussein and adopt the train-the-trainer model. This approach will enable our bilingual teachers to guide students in maximizing the benefits of the dual language program, fostering an enriching and stimulating educational environment.

Collaboration

For bilingual teachers, the instructional technology specialist and the bilingual coaches will meet at least three times a week during the common planning period to discuss and plan the integration of new technology tools and methods to enhance our bilingual students' learning experiences. If more time for collaboration and support is required, additional meetings will be scheduled during the designated career and technology planning learning community day.

Schedule and Timeline

In August 2024, Raymond Elementary in Aldine ISD, Houston, TX, will host a full-day Bilingual Language Acquisition Strategies Workshop led by presenter Ileana Cabrera. This workshop is designed for the teachers of the Multilingual Program in Aldine ISD, offering deep exploration into bilingual language acquisition strategies. Attendees can expect interactive workshops, collaborative lesson planning sessions, and opportunities for classroom observations led by experienced bilingual educators, supplemented with video recordings for modeling. The program ensures ongoing support throughout implementation, including significant duration, attendance tracking, and pre/post surveys. Participants will also gain access to customized bilingual teaching materials and online resources to enhance their teaching practices.
